How to Book a Restaurant in Istanbul: Practical Tips for Visitors

· 6 min read

How to reserve a table in Istanbul: when to book, phone or WhatsApp, what to say, window tables, groups, lateness and traffic, with a sample message.

A good evening often starts with a reservation, and a good reservation is usually a handful of small details. In Istanbul, where traffic is unpredictable and view tables fill first, those details count for more than visitors expect. The nine tips below make a booking easier for you and for the venue.

1. Book early

For a weekday evening, a few days ahead is a good habit. For weekends and special days, book much earlier. Window tables are among the first to go.

2. Give an exact time

"Around the evening" makes planning harder for everyone. If you want the light, check the sunset for your date first; our table of Istanbul sunset times by month helps.

3. State the real number of guests

Include children and mention a stroller if you have one. A table set for the right number avoids waiting and moving. If the number changes, say so.

4. Say what table you prefer

A window, a quiet corner or a larger table: ask for it when you book. It may not be guaranteed, but a noted request improves your chances.

5. Mention the occasion

A birthday, an anniversary or a small celebration helps the venue prepare. If you want a surprise, agree who will speak to the venue.

6. Leave a written record

Even after a phone call, a short message confirming date, time and number protects both sides. WhatsApp is practical for this.

7. Know the menu and your needs

Look at the menu in advance. If you have allergies or dietary needs, mention them when you book or before you arrive.

8. Allow for traffic

Istanbul traffic can change an evening. Add a buffer, and tell the venue if you will be late.

9. Tell them early if plans change

If you need to move or cancel, say so as soon as possible so the table can go to someone else.

A sample message

Hello, I would like to book a table for four on Saturday at 18:30, ideally by the window. It is a family dinner and we have one child with us. Could you confirm?

It carries the day, time, number, preference and occasion in one go, so nobody has to ask follow-up questions.

Phone or message?

  • Phone: you get an answer straight away and can discuss table options. At busy hours it can be hard to get through.
  • Message: the reply may take a little longer, but you have a record and can write at your own pace.

Use the channel the venue itself publishes.

Larger groups

For parties of more than six, book earlier, appoint one contact person, confirm numbers the day before and discuss the menu in advance; shared plates often speed up service. Our guide to Turkish meze shows how sharing works.

Questions worth asking

  1. Is the table held for a set time?
  2. Can I have a window table?
  3. Is there a child seat?
  4. What do you suggest for parking or arrival?
  5. Is there a menu option for my dietary needs?

Choosing the hour at a view venue

If the view matters, the hour matters. Sitting 45 to 60 minutes before sunset lets you enjoy the light change. For ideas about how the evening can unfold, see our guide to dinner with a view for visitors.

What a venue may ask you

Expect a few questions in return: your name, a phone number, the date and time, the party size, and any special notes. Some venues ask for a confirmation the day before. Answering promptly keeps the table secure.

Special requests

Besides a window table, you may mention a high chair, step-free access, a quiet corner, a birthday cake brought from outside, or dietary needs such as vegetarian or allergen-free dishes. Not every request can be guaranteed, but venues generally try, and an early note helps them plan.

Reservations for the sunset hour

The hour around sunset is the busiest at any view venue, and in summer that can mean a late evening. Look at the sunset time for your date, decide how much light you want, and book earlier than you think you need to. Weekday evenings give you more choice than weekend ones.

What not to do

  • Do not book several places and release them at the last minute.
  • Do not arrive with a bigger group than you booked.
  • Do not leave a late arrival unannounced.
  • Do not assume a verbal agreement will be remembered; confirm in writing.

A short checklist

Date, exact time, number of guests, table preference, occasion, dietary needs, a written confirmation and a travel buffer. If you have those seven, you have a good reservation.

At 7 Hills

7 Hills is inside Ulus Park at Adnan Saygun Caddesi No: 71/B. Its floor-to-ceiling glass dining room faces the Bosphorus and the 15 July Martyrs Bridge. To reserve, call +90 533 373 91 34 or send a message on the same number on WhatsApp, and mention a window preference or an occasion if you have one. You can see the room in the gallery.

Questions

Do I need a reservation in Istanbul?

For weekend evenings, sunset hours and any table with a view, yes, it is wise. Weekday evenings are easier, but calling first still saves time.

Can I book by WhatsApp?

Many venues take reservations by phone or WhatsApp. Use the channel the venue itself publishes; a written message also leaves a record.

What should I include in a booking?

Date, exact time, number of people including children, any table preference such as a window, allergies, and the occasion if there is one.

What if I am running late?

Tell the venue as soon as you know. Short delays are often tolerated, but a table cannot be held indefinitely.
